FAQs​

I am planning to enrol in the Travel Smart Single-trip Cover, do we need to enrol travel insurance separately if I travel with my friend?
No, you don’t. The Travel Smart Single-trip Cover policy can cover up to 20 insured persons. Simply select “Individual” premium package and the number of insured during enrolment.​
An applicant (i.e. policyholder) means a person named as the certificate holder in the certificate of insurance (for Single-trip Cover and Multi-trip Cover) or the policyholder in the policy schedule (for Annual Cover), while an insured person named in the certificate of insurance or the policy schedule is a person who is covered by the insurance policy. A beneficiary is a person who has the right to receive the benefits of the insurance policy upon the death of the insured person.​
  • For Single-trip Cover, the coverage period is up to 180 days. You can enrol within 120 days prior to the departure date.​
  • For Multi-trip Cover, the coverage period per trip can be 5 days or 7 days. You can select the number of days covered per trip upon enrolment. However, all trips are required to register via Blue Cross website prior to the date of departure and complete within the 1-year validity period counting from the date of enrolment.​
  • For Annual Cover, the period of insurance is 1 year with unlimited trips and up to 90 days per trip. You can enrol in the plan 30 days prior to the policy effective date.​
  • The applicant must be 18 years old or above. Child below age 18 must obtain consent from the parent or guardian in order to be insured individually.​
  • For Single-trip Cover and Multi-trip Cover, enrolment age is 6 weeks or above. For Annual Cover, enrolment age is from 6 weeks to 70 years.​
You have to enrol in Travel Smart with the premium fully paid before immigration clearance when departing Hong Kong. If you enrol in Multi-trip Cover, you must register your trip via Blue Cross website prior to the date of departure.​
Yes, this policy is valid for the purpose of leisure travel or business travel (limited to administrative and clerical works only).​
You can enrol in the Cruise Plan of Single-trip Cover which provides all the benefits under the Single-trip Cover plus the Cruise Cancellation and Interruption Benefit, Shore Excursion Cancellation Benefit and Satellite Phone Expenses Benefit.​
What is the difference if the coverage for the elderly and children?
Except the following coverage, the elderly and children are entitled to the same benefits in “Travel Smart”.​
  • “Medical Expenses Benefit”: For an insured person aged above 70, the maximum amount of benefit payable under Medical Expenses Benefit shall be 50% of the limit applicable to the plan selected.​
  • “Personal Accident Benefit”: For an insured person aged below 18 or above 70, the maximum amount of benefit payable under Personal Accident Benefit shall be 30% of the limit applicable to the plan selected.​
  • “Personal Money Benefit”: Not applicable to insured person aged below 10.​
  • Yes, “Baggage Benefit” covers loss or physical breakage of, or damage to mobile phone resulting from theft, robbery, burglary, accident or mishandling by the carriers during the journey. The payable amount is subject to the maximum benefit limit per insured person per journey of the plan selected. Only one mobile phone for each insured person will be covered in the same period of insurance.​
  • If the insured person would like to claim the loss of mobile phone, he/she is able to provide the original receipt for the purchase of the mobile phone showing its International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), Serial Number and Model Number, the date of purchase and the price paid. For damage of the mobile phone, the relevant repair services should be provided by an official authorised service support centre.​
No, the above situation will not be covered. “Baggage Delay Benefit” is only payable if the baggage is delayed for at least 6 hours after the insured person’s arrival at a destination overseas. Any loss which occurs after the insured person has returned to Hong Kong or reached his/her final destination will be excluded.​
Yes, Travel Smart covers leisure and non-professional sports activities including skiing and other winter sports, diving to a depth not greater than 30 metres below sea level, parachuting with instructor/trainer, bungee jumping, trekking at an altitude limit not greater than 5,000 metres above sea level, and all water sports.​
Yes, if the OTA is issued to the destination by HKSAR at least 24 hours after the certificate of insurance (for Single-trip Cover and Multi-trip Cover) or the Policy (for Annual Cover) is issued, and the travel arrangement has to cancel within 7 days before the scheduled date of departure of the journey, the benefit shall be payable according to the OTA Extension of the “Trip Cancellation Benefit”.​
Even if you have selected Couple Package, it is not necessary for the couple to travel together for every trip. You will get covered no matter you travel abroad by yourself or you two travel to different destinations separately.​
Yes, Travel Smart covers the overseas accommodation costs due to a delay caused by adverse weather.​
“Trip Cancellation Benefit” covers:​
  • Compliance with a witness summons, jury service or compulsory quarantine of the insured person;​
  • Death, serious bodily injury or serious sickness of the insured person, his/her immediate family member, close business partner, foreign domestic helper or travel companion;​
  • Death of the insured person’s pet occurred prior to the commencement of the journey;​
  • The insured child or the insured person (who is a parent and a travel companion of an insured child), if the insured child is required to attend school interview or public examination arranged by Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority being rescheduled to a date within the scheduled travel period;​
  • Natural disaster, infectious disease, unanticipated outbreak of industrial action involving the arranged public conveyance, act of terrorist, riot or civil commotion at the destination within 7 days before the departure date;​
  • Outbound Travel Alert for the destination is in effect within 7 days before the departure date (payable according to Outbound Travel Alert Extension);​
  • Fire or flood damage to the insured person's home in Hong Kong within 10 days before the departure date.​
Apart from Re-routing and Trip Curtailment, the “Trip Interruption Benefit” has enhanced to cover the following:​
  • Cancellation of Local Tour Benefit reimburses irrecoverable prepaid expenses in the event of closure of the tourist spot due to unpredictable serious destruction or closure of the local tour operator.​
  • Reimburse the additional accommodation and meals expenses for failure of boarding the public conveyance during the journey due to overbooking.​
  • Offer a special allowance for purchasing alternative services due to closure of the accommodation or vehicle rental service providers.​
  • The claim must be submitted within 30 days after the occurrence of any event in writing or through our 24/7 Smart eClaims online platform on Blue Cross HK App or Blue Cross website with 3 simple steps (Input, Upload and Confirm). The service significantly shortens the claim processing time so that the claim payment will be settled faster via autopay.​
  • For claim under Personal Liability Benefit, written notice of the event giving rise to the legal liability must be given to Blue Cross immediately together with required documents.​
Copy of boarding pass, air/travel ticket, and confirmation from the airlines or public conveyances stating the reason and duration of delay should be provided. For additional travel and overseas accommodation expenses, provision of original receipt(s) issued by the relevant service providers and any other providers of alternative travel arrangement as well as refund proof of original prepaid and unused travel arrangement are also required.​
Insured person must report to the local police within 24 hours upon discovery of loss, and provide the original report from local police as well as the receipts of travel document replacement in order to submit a claim.​
The policyholder may cancel the policy at any time by giving no less than 7 days’ prior written notice to Blue Cross. Provided that no claim has been made during the period of insurance, the policyholder shall be entitled to a partial refund of premium equivalent to the actual premium paid for that period of insurance less the premium to be charged as calculated at the Blue Cross’ short period rates for the period of insurance has been in force. The minimum premium of each policy is HK$500.​
Annual Cover can be renewed annually, subject to underwriting approval. The renewal notice will be sent to your designated email address or by post within 30 – 45 days before policy expiry. Customer shall settle the renewal premium before expiry date, otherwise the policy will be automatically lapsed on the expiry date without further notice.​
